Five Reasons I'm Glad I Switched to Cycling for Everyday Journeys

Last year, I took part in Switch Your Journey, a challenge to try cycling for everyday journeys.
Since then, cycling has become a regular part of my routine and I now choose my bike for many of my journeys instead of driving or taking public transport.
If you're thinking about taking part in this year's challenge, here are five reasons why I'm so glad I made the switch.
1. It's often the quickest way to get from A to B
One of the biggest surprises for me was how much time cycling can save.
Getting to work is usually quicker by bike than by bus. The bus stops frequently and often takes a longer route, whereas on my bike I can travel more directly to where I need to go. It used to take me 40 minutes to get to work, but by bike it only takes me 12!
The same applies when meeting friends. Once you factor in walking to the station, waiting for a train or bus, and then walking again at the other end, cycling is often the faster option.

2. It's a great way to stay active
I enjoy running and swimming, but cycling gives me something a little different.
When I'm cycling, I'm still being active, but I also get to enjoy my surroundings. It's also a form of exercise that feels built into my day rather than something I have to find extra time for.
3. It saves money
Using my bike for regular journeys means I'm spending less on transport.
The costs of public transport can quickly add up, especially when you're making multiple journeys throughout the week. Cycling helps me keep those costs down while still getting where I need to go.
Since switching to cycling I'm saving about £15 to £20 per week!
4. It's comfortable and convenient
One thing I really appreciate about cycling is how straightforward it is.
I don't have to carry everything on my back. Using a basket or attaching bags to the bike makes it easy to transport what I need, whether that's shopping, work items or anything else.
And unlike driving, finding somewhere to park a bike is usually simple.
5. It's therapeutic

Perhaps the biggest benefit for me is how cycling makes me feel.
Cycling gives me time to decompress between work and home. By the time I arrive, I've had a chance to clear my head and transition into the next part of my day.
Instead of stepping off crowded, stuffy public transport feeling stressed and exhausted, I arrive feeling refreshed. Time outdoors can make a huge difference.
